Musty smell when the aircond starts

若置之不理: Left alone, the damp filter keeps the smell coming back and the job grows from a filter to an evaporator clean.

症状

  • Damp, sour or gym-bag smell in the first minute after switching the aircond on
  • Smell fades once the fan has run for a while
  • Worse after the car has sat in the rain or overnight
  • Window misting more than usual on humid evenings

原因

Damp dust and pollen sit on the cabin filter and the evaporator core, and the cool, dark airbox is a good place for mould. Malaysian humidity does the rest. A filter that has been in the car for two years or more is the usual starting point, and the Iriz filter is behind the glovebox where owners never see it.

解决方案

Replace the cabin filter first, then have the evaporator cleaned and the drain checked if the smell returns within a month. Proton sells a standard filter and an N95 version. Ask for the filter by part number rather than by model year, because sellers list two versions and one comes with a holder bracket. Run the fan on fresh air for a minute before switching the aircond off at the end of a trip, which dries the core.

A smell is not a safety fault and it is rarely a sign of a failing compressor. It is almost always the filter and the wet core behind it.

Give it one filter change before you agree to an evaporator clean. If the smell comes back inside a month, then pay for the clean.

社区笔记

The filter is a cheap part, around RM35 to RM60 depending on standard versus N95, and most workshops charge a small labour fee because the glovebox has to come out. A proper evaporator clean is a bigger job, RM150 to RM250, so try the filter first. If water drips into the front footwell, that is a blocked drain, not a filter problem.
