Manual gearbox busy at highway speed
可以继续驾驶。方便时再维修。
涉及车型年份: 2014-2021
症状
- Engine sits near 3,500 rpm at 110 km/h in fifth
- Noticeable engine drone on long highway drives
- Feels like a gear is missing above fifth
- Fuel use on the highway is not much better than in town
原因
The five-speed manual was geared for town work, not for cruising. Fifth is short enough that highway speed keeps the engine high in its rev range, which is why the manual Iriz is fun on a back road and tiring on a drive to Penang. Nothing is broken. It is the ratio in the box.
解决方案
No repair exists, and none is needed. Check the revs against speed on a test drive so you know what you are buying, and check the clutch does not slip under load in fourth at low speed, because a slipping clutch can feel like the same symptom at first. Treat the drone as a buying decision rather than a fault.

This is a characteristic, not a fault. It matters because a used manual Iriz test drive on a short city loop will not show it, and the first highway trip is a surprise.
If the revs climb without the car speeding up, stop and have the clutch checked. That is the one version of this symptom that is a real fault.

paultan.org's long-term review of a 2019 1.3 Standard MT names short gearing as one of the car's drawbacks. Owners who do regular highway miles tend to pick the CVT for this reason, and used manual prices are driven by enthusiasts who do not care. No fix is sold, so be sceptical of anyone offering one.
