CVT Shudder at Low Speed
Safe to keep driving. Fix it when convenient.
Symptoms
- Shudder pulling away from standstill
- Hesitation at 10-30 km/h
Cause
CVT fluid degradation reduces clamping force across the pulley.
Solution
Fresh CVT fluid is the usual fix, and it has to be Toyota CVTF FE. A workshop drains and refills, then relearns the CVT with a scan tool. Ask for both on the same visit, because new fluid without the relearn often leaves a light shudder behind. A drain and refill runs RM200 to RM350. If the shudder survives fluid and a relearn, the next step is a valve body inspection at a transmission specialist, and that is a quote worth getting in writing.

CVT shudder at low speed is usually fluid, not a gearbox on its way out. The cheap test is a fluid change with the correct oil. The expensive mistake is accepting a rebuild quote before anyone has touched the fluid.
Ask the workshop two questions. Which CVTF goes in, and does the price include the relearn. A shop that answers both without hesitating knows this gearbox.
