Engine Oil Change

Coverage reviewedbeginner
30 minutes~RM 80parts only · as of Oct 26, 20267 steps
Drain the oil warm, never hot. Hot oil burns
This job needs a jack and stands. Never go under a car held up by a jack alone
Take the used oil to a workshop or a recycling point. Do not pour it down a drain

Tools required: Socket Wrench · Oil Filter Wrench · Oil Drain Pan · Funnel · Jack and Stands

Steps

1

Warm the engine for a few minutes

Tip: Three to five minutes is plenty. Warm oil drains faster and carries more of the old dirt out with it
2

Jack the car up and support it on stands

Warning: No jack and stands? Skip to the workshop price below. This is not a job to do on a jack alone
3

Set the pan under the sump and undo the plug

Tip: 17mm socket, turn anticlockwise. Keep the plug and its washer in a cup, you need them again in a minute
4

Take the old filter off and let it drain

Warning: Oil spills out of the filter housing. Rags under the car save your driveway
5

Fit the new filter by hand

Tip: Smear fresh oil on the rubber gasket, seat it, then three quarters of a turn more. No wrench on this part
6

Refit the plug and fill with 5W-30

Warning: Do not overtighten the plug. The sump is aluminium and the thread strips easily
Tip: 1.6L takes 4.0L. 1.3L takes 3.5L. Add most of it, then check the dipstick before the last of the bottle goes in
7

Run it, then check for leaks and top up

Tip: Two minutes at idle, then off. Look under the car for drips and read the dipstick after five minutes

An oil change is the cheapest maintenance this engine gets. The parts are small money and the work is half an hour. The catch is the jack. The sump sits low, so there is no safe way to reach the plug without stands under the car.

The grade

CamPro VVT engines take SAE 5W-30, which is what the service data and the Iriz fluids page list. Check the bottle says 5W-30 before you pay. A fully synthetic is fine too. The grade is what matters, not the word on the front of the bottle.

What a workshop charges

Doing it yourself costs the oil and a filter. An outside workshop charges RM150 to RM220 for the same job with labour on a car this size. Our Iriz service table puts the 10,000km oil service at RM180, which sits inside that band. Prices checked 2026-10-26.

If you have no stands, that is the honest option. Forty-five minutes at a workshop beats a Saturday on your back in the rain.

What to check afterwards

  • A piece of cardboard under the sump overnight. Any fresh drip means the plug or the filter is not seated.
  • Dipstick between MIN and MAX, read with the engine off for five minutes.
  • The oil light should go out within a second of starting, not linger.
  • The invoice should name the grade and the litres. If it says “engine oil” with no grade, ask.

When to stop

If the plug will not budge, if the old filter is seized, or if the car does not feel solid on the stands, stop. A stripped sump thread costs more than this job ever saved.
