Engine Oil Change (Toyota Vios)
In progressbeginnerTools required: Socket Wrench · Oil Filter Wrench · Oil Drain Pan · Jack and Stands
Steps
Warm the engine for a few minutes
Jack the car and put it on stands
Set the pan and undo the sump plug
Remove the old filter and let it drain
Fit the new filter by hand only
Refit the plug and fill with the correct grade
Run it, then check for leaks and top up
A Vios that does e-hailing duty covers its service interval in a few months. That is fine, as long as the oil changes keep pace with the mileage rather than the calendar. The 2NR-FE is not fussy about brand. It does care about grade and interval.
What a workshop charges
Doing it yourself costs the oil and a filter. A workshop charges RM150 to RM250 for the same job with labour on a sedan. Prices checked 2026-10-26, from Malaysian 10,000km service price guides and workshop labour lists. Toyota service centres quote at the top of that band, small workshops at the bottom.
What to check afterwards
- Cardboard under the sump overnight. A fresh drip means the plug or the filter gasket is not seated.
- Dipstick between MIN and MAX, five minutes after shutdown.
- Oil light out within a second of a cold start.
- Grade and litres named on the invoice.
- Next change at 10,000km or six months. High-mileage cars should follow the kilometre figure, not the calendar.
When to stop
A plug that will not move, a filter that will not come off, or a car that rocks on the stands. Stop and hand it over. Nothing about this job is worth a sump.
