Power window failure

low
Coverage reviewed

Safe to keep driving. Fix it when convenient.

If ignored: Left alone, the glass can drop into the door and has to be propped shut before driving in rain.

Symptoms

  • One window stops responding from the driver's door switch
  • Window moves slowly, then stops halfway
  • Click from the door with no movement
  • Works from its own door switch but not from the master switch

Cause

The switch pack in the driver's door and the window lift mechanism both wear. The master switch carries every window's current, so a tired contact there can kill one window while the others still work. A window that is slow before it stops is usually the regulator or motor, not the switch.

Solution

Ask a workshop to check the switch pack first, then the regulator and motor in the affected door. On these cars the switch is the common and cheap failure, and a used or new switch pack is a straight swap. If the glass has dropped into the door, stop using the window and have it propped shut before driving in rain.

A stuck window is not a safety problem until it rains or the car is parked in a car park. Then it is. Deal with it before the monsoon rather than after.

The owner-level check is simple: try the same window from its own door switch. If it moves there but not from the driver’s master switch, the fault is the switch pack. If it is slow or grinding from both, it is the regulator. That difference is the difference between a cheap repair and a door trim removal.

Ask for the old part back. Switch packs are small and easy to swap, and a workshop that charges regulator money for a switch is the common overcharge on this job.

Community notes

Owners on the Lowyat.NET Gen-2 thread list the power window as the first thing that breaks, and one 2005 owner reported a fix at Proton Edar for under RM100 in 2012. A regulator or motor takes the bill higher than a switch.
